What is the stress response
Stress is your body’s natural alarm system. When you face a challenge or threat, your nervous system springs into action: your heart rate climbs, your breath quickens, stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline flood your system, and your muscles tense up. This is the fight-or-flight response, and it evolved to keep you safe.

When resting heart rate climbs above your baseline, it can signal stress, illness, or that your body hasn’t recovered from recent exertion.
Sleep quality and duration are stress recovery superpowers. Stress and poor sleep feed each other. High stress suppresses deep sleep and REM, and lack of sleep leaves you vulnerable to stress. When you see your sleep declining alongside rising stress, your body is telling you it needs help recovering.

Regular movement buffers stress. Exercise shifts you out of fight-or-flight, burns off stress hormones, and strengthens your cardiovascular system. Even a 20-minute walk can lower cortisol and improve mood. Mix steady aerobic activity with strength work and flexibility for the broadest benefit.
